International Visibility
The Slovenian Film Centre promotes the international visibility of Slovenian cinema and helps Slovenian filmmaking reach audiences beyond the country’s borders. Since 2000, in cooperation with festivals, cinematheques, cultural institutions, diplomatic and consular missions, and other partners, it has organised or supported more than 100 retrospectives, festival focuses, Slovenian Film Days and other major presentations.
During this period, Slovenian films have been presented in more than 50 cities and 30 countries across Europe, Asia, and North and South America. Records include more than 450 screenings of at least 200 different films representing the work of more than 120 directors. As older archival records do not always contain complete programmes, the actual scale of these presentations was even greater.
Retrospectives of Slovenian Cinema
Since the first retrospective following Slovenia’s independence, held in Montpellier in 2000, more than 60 survey, thematic and auteur retrospectives of Slovenian cinema have taken place. They have been hosted by film and cultural institutions across Europe, North and South America, and Asia, including Lincoln Center in New York, the Billy Wilder Theater in Los Angeles and the Center Pompidou in Paris.
Retrospectives offer a more comprehensive introduction to Slovenian cinema by bringing together film classics, digitally restored works and contemporary productions. Individual programmes may also focus on a particular period, genre or filmmaker.
Slovenia in Focus
Slovenian filmmaking has been featured in more than 20 festival focuses, panoramas and other curated programmes. These have ranged from surveys of contemporary production and Slovenian animated or short films to presentations of individual filmmakers and periods in film history.
Screenings are often accompanied by discussions with filmmakers, industry meetings and presentations of the Slovenian film industry. Such programmes give Slovenian films and their creators access to new audiences and the international film community.
Slovenian Film Days
Since the middle of the previous decade, more than 40 editions of Slovenian Film Days have taken place in numerous European cities, including Belgrade, Sarajevo, Budapest, Berlin, Paris and Pula. By returning to the same cities each year, Slovenian cinema has become a regular part of local cultural programmes.
The Slovenian Film Centre organises them in cooperation with local film and cultural institutions and the diplomatic and consular missions of the Republic of Slovenia. The programmes bring together recent feature, documentary, animated and short films, restored works of film heritage, and guest appearances by Slovenian filmmakers.
